Cairns Firms Capitalise on Emerging Digital Radio Opportunities
Local operators and advertisers are moving early to secure slots and partnerships as online stations expand reach in Far North Queensland.
How we reported this

Cairns media startups and retailers have locked in advertising packages with new online radio platforms this month, securing discounted rates before national demand pushes prices higher.
The shift follows a documented national uptick in online audio listening that has opened fresh revenue streams for regional operators previously reliant on traditional FM spots. Cairns businesses see the timing as critical because national networks are still finalising their northern Queensland coverage maps, leaving room for local voices to claim audience share before larger players arrive.
Stations and retailers already active
Two outlets operating from the Cairns CBD have signed deals with advertisers along The Esplanade and in the Smithfield industrial precinct. One station based near Grafton Street now carries sponsored segments for dive operators and tour companies, while a second service streaming from a small studio near the railway station has added daily business updates paid for by local accountants and equipment suppliers.
Internal figures from one platform show average listener numbers reached 4,200 unique daily streams in June, up from 2,900 in the same month last year. Ad packages sold through July are priced at $180 for a 30-second spot, a figure station managers say will rise once they hit 6,000 daily streams.
Practical steps for other operators
Businesses interested in testing the format can contact the two active stations directly before the end of the financial year to lock in current rates. Those that act now can also request bundled mentions across both streams, a tactic already used by three Esplanade cafes that reported a 12 percent lift in weekend bookings after two weeks of rotation.
