Reef Resilience Tours reported a 22 percent rise in advance bookings for its July and August departures after introducing three new hybrid-electric vessels at its Trinity Inlet base.
The increase comes as Cairns tourism operators seek steady revenue streams following the Telstra network outage that disrupted online reservations and payment systems across Far North Queensland on 10 July. Local firms that maintained manual backup systems or diversified channels have gained ground on competitors still recovering from lost sales data.
Reef Resilience Tours runs daily departures from the Cairns Esplanade pontoon and maintains a second staging point at the Smithfield Marina. The company partners with the Cairns Chamber of Commerce on its Clean Marine accreditation program and supplies data to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s reef health monitoring initiative.
Operations along the waterfront
Staff at the Esplanade ticket office process an average of 180 passengers each morning before the first 7.45am departure. The Smithfield site handles larger groups arriving by coach from the Captain Cook Highway, cutting transfer times for guests staying in northern suburbs. Both locations now display real-time fuel and emissions data on public screens to meet new transparency rules introduced by the authority in May.
Each hybrid vessel carries 48 passengers and consumes 35 percent less diesel than the previous fleet, according to company records filed with the Cairns Port Authority. Ticket prices start at $185 for a half-day snorkel itinerary and $265 for the full-day package that includes lunch at the floating pontoon near Michaelmas Cay.
