Cairns Retail Revival: Who’s Cashing In on Shifting Shopping Trends

Retail in Cairns is on the up. Following a lull through much of 2025, the city's retail sector reported a 12% sales growth in the first half of 2026, according to figures released by the Cairns Chamber of Commerce. This surge is opening fresh opportunities for local businesses and attracting new ventures to established shopping zones.

The retail upswing in Cairns comes amid broader changes in consumer behaviour and economic conditions. Shoppers are increasingly drawn to experiences and hybrid retail models that combine in-store browsing with seamless online options. Meanwhile, Cairns’ continued tourism recovery, now back at 85% of pre-pandemic levels, has boosted foot traffic in central shopping precincts. The result is a commercial environment ripe for redevelopment and innovation just as retailers nationwide grapple with changing markets.

Two Precincts Lead the Way

In the Cairns CBD, the Esplanade precinct is showing signs of revival with recent openings including the artisanal food store Tropical Bites and the technology outlet ByteWorks. These venues join the long-running Cairns Central Shopping Centre in drawing both locals and visitors. Cairns Central reported a 15% increase in weekday foot traffic since March 2026, a key indicator that retail investment here is paying off.

Meanwhile, the emerging culture and retail hub in Edge Hill is also benefiting. The new Nightjar Market, launched in April, has attracted more than 5,000 visitors in its first two months, with stallholders ranging from bespoke jewellery makers to gourmet street food vendors. Cairns Regional Council’s business support program has played a critical role by providing grants of up to $20,000 to market vendors and helping with promotional activities.

Data Underscores Growth Potential

Tourism Australia’s recent report shows Cairns’ retail sector revenue grew by 9.3% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year. Local analysts note that retail rents in prime locations have also risen, with Esplanade retail space commanding an average $700 per square metre annually, up 5% from 2025. This is a positive signal for landlords and investors betting on Cairns’ commercial prospects.

However, some retailers caution that rising living costs for locals, with median household expenses increasing 4.8% in the past year, may temper some of the enthusiasm. Businesses that can balance appealing both to tourists and to price-sensitive locals seem best positioned to thrive. Several stores have started trialing integrated loyalty programs that track both in-store and online purchases, aiming to build customer retention beyond the peak tourist months.

Looking ahead, retail experts suggest that synergy between Cairns’ retail scene and its cultural attractions will drive further gains. The Cairns Art Gallery’s planned expansion, commencing later this year, is expected to increase visitor numbers nearby, offering retailers fresh foot traffic.
