Cairns business networks have scaled back three scheduled community events this July after organisers cited direct pressure from overseas platforms copying local designs and undercutting prices.

Local organisers shift focus to in-person security

The Cairns Chamber of Commerce moved its July 18 product showcase from the Cairns Convention Centre to a smaller room at The Pier Marketplace on Abbott Street. Chamber staff cited repeated reports of designs from local makers appearing on Temu without permission. Another group, the Far North Queensland Business Association, postponed its planned July 25 meet-up at the Smithfield Business Park venue after members reported lost sales to the same site.

These adjustments matter now because recent national coverage of Australian artists battling Temu has prompted local suppliers to review how they display work at public events. Cairns groups that once welcomed open stalls now require proof of original ownership before allowing displays.

Numbers show the scale of the shift

Chamber records indicate average attendance at its monthly events fell from 142 in January to 97 last month. Ticket prices for the remaining July gatherings rose from $65 to $85 to cover added verification steps. The association reported that 14 of its 62 registered vendors for the Smithfield session withdrew after learning their work could be photographed and uploaded overseas within hours.

Businesses along Lake Street have begun offering private viewings instead of open events to limit exposure. Several retailers in the Cairns CBD now require signed agreements that bar attendees from using phones inside designated display areas.

Event planners recommend checking vendor lists in advance and confirming physical attendance policies before committing to any July or August gathering. Groups planning future sessions are advised to contact the chamber office on Abbott Street by July 20 to register updated security requirements.
