Cairns locals pack venues for mid-July film and gallery openings

Cairns residents turned out in numbers for the opening weekend of the Cairns Winter Screen Series at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre on Sheridan Street, where three sold-out sessions screened on July 11.

The timing aligns with the end of school holidays and the start of the dry-season tourist influx, giving local promoters a short window to capture both residents and visitors before August events dominate the calendar. Council visitor data released last month showed a 12 percent rise in domestic arrivals to the region compared with July 2025, pushing venues to add extra sessions.

Two venues anchor the current run

Programmers at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre have paired the film series with a companion exhibition at the Tanks Arts Centre on Collins Avenue. The Tanks show features 28 works by Far North Queensland artists installed in the former fuel tanks, open daily from 10am. Shuttle buses between the two sites run every 40 minutes on weekends, cutting travel time for families who want to combine a film with a gallery visit.

Both organisations report that local memberships have climbed steadily since March. The Tanks recorded 1,840 new annual passes in the past four months, while the Performing Arts Centre sold 2,150 season tickets for its July-to-September program.

Numbers behind the talk

Ticket sales for the current film series reached 4,650 by Friday afternoon, according to box-office figures released by the centre. Entry starts at $22 for adults and $15 for concession holders, with family passes at $65. Organisers expect the total to top 6,000 once the final three screenings finish on July 19.

Practical next step: tickets for remaining sessions and the Tanks exhibition can be bought online through the venues’ websites or at the door from 9am daily. Early arrival is advised for the 7pm screenings, as walk-up capacity is limited to 40 seats per session.
