Cairns arts programs are lifting local creators into the spotlight through targeted showcases and residencies this year.

The Cairns Young Writers and Performers Lab opened applications on 1 July for its 2026 intake of 12 participants aged 18 to 28.

Participants will use the Tanks Arts Centre on Collins Avenue for weekly workshops and the Munro Martin Parklands stage on Lake Street for public readings and short performances. Both sites run free entry sessions on Thursday evenings through August. The lab also partners with the Cairns Regional Council’s Create Cairns fund, which covers materials and small stipends for selected artists.
Recent data from the council shows 47 applications received in the first week alone, up from 29 at the same point in 2025. Ticket prices for the closing showcase on 28 August start at 15 dollars, with proceeds returned directly to the emerging artists.

Interested residents can submit work samples through the council website before 31 July. Walk-in information sessions are scheduled at the Tanks Arts Centre foyer on 18 and 25 July from 6pm. Those unable to attend can email the program coordinator for digital submission details.
