Cairns Esplanade activity shifts as locals turn waterfront into daily wellness circuit
New classes and venues are turning the stretch from the lagoon to the pier into a year-round routine for residents.
How we reported this

Work crews finished installing new shaded exercise stations along the Cairns Esplanade last month, extending the existing fitness circuit by 800 metres between the Lagoon and the Pier Marketplace.
The change matters now because winter visitor numbers have dropped while permanent residents in the inner suburbs have risen by 4,200 since the 2021 census, pushing demand for free or low-cost outdoor activities that fit around work schedules.
Edge Hill residents now meet at the Abbott Street end for 6am boot camps run by the Cairns Regional Council’s Active Cairns program, then walk south past the new stations to the Salt House cafe on the waterfront for post-session coffee. Further north at Trinity Beach, the same council scheme has added surf-skill sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the surf club, drawing parents who drop children at the nearby Trinity Beach State School before joining in.
Council records show 1,850 people registered for at least one Active Cairns session in the first quarter of 2026, up from 1,120 the previous year, with the largest growth in the 35-to-49 age group. A single adult session costs $12 when not covered by the annual $85 membership.
Local operators adjust offerings
Operators along Lake Street have responded by extending opening hours and adding early-morning takeaway options. The Pier Marketplace now opens its lower-level retail doors at 5.30am on weekdays to serve participants finishing the Esplanade circuit, while a new juice bar inside the complex reports selling 180 smoothies before 8am on weekdays.
What comes next for participants
Anyone wanting to join can register through the Cairns Regional Council website or at the Lagoon kiosk before the next round of timetabled classes begins on 20 July. Those who already hold an Active Cairns membership can simply turn up at any listed station or beach session with a towel and water bottle.
