Cairns Retirement Villages Add Wellness Hubs and Shorter Waitlists, Pulling Locals Back

New wellness centres and shorter approval timelines at two Cairns retirement sites opened in early 2025 have drawn dozens of local applicants who previously planned moves south.
These shifts matter now because Cairns’ over-65 population rose 11 percent between the 2021 census and the latest Queensland Government estimate released in March 2026, while housing costs in southern capitals climbed faster than local unit prices.
The Haven at Freshwater on Redbank Road added a 12-seat hydrotherapy pool and daily physio clinic in February 2025. At the same time, the Cairns Regional Council’s Seniors Active Living Program began offering free transport from Edge Hill and Manunda addresses to the new facilities three mornings a week.
Shorter queues and bundled services
Applications for independent-living units at The Haven now clear in eight weeks on average, down from five months in 2023, according to the village’s July occupancy report. Entry prices for a one-bedroom villa start at $395,000 with a 10 percent refundable deposit, figures listed on the operator’s website last month.
Residents also gain automatic membership in the council program, which covers weekly market runs to Rustic Markets on Spence Street and monthly reef-view lunches at the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon kiosk.
