Cairns Regional Council Approves New Infrastructure and Environmental Initiatives This Week

The Cairns Regional Council passed a series of resolutions at its July 9 meeting that aim to improve local infrastructure, address environmental concerns, and boost community facilities across the region.

These decisions come amid rising pressures on Cairns’ growth management and environmental protection efforts, particularly as the city navigates demands on its aging infrastructure and ongoing efforts to safeguard the Great Barrier Reef from urban impacts.

Infrastructure Upgrades and Environmental Commitments

One major resolution approved project funding for road and pedestrian pathways upgrades along Sheridan Street in the suburb of Manoora with a budget of $3.4 million. This corridor links key residential zones to commercial areas and schools, aiming to ease traffic congestion and improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians.

Additionally, council endorsed further investment in the Cairns Northern Beaches Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade located in Yorkeys Knob. This upgrade, scheduled to be completed by mid-2028, is a $15 million project intended to reduce nutrient runoff impacting the nearby reef areas, aligning with recent state-level water quality targets.

Community Services and Climate Resilience Efforts

Council also approved expanded funding for the Cairns Indigenous Art Centre on Abbott Street in the city’s CBD. The $1 million allocation will support new exhibit spaces and cultural programs, underscoring ongoing commitment to First Nations engagement and local heritage preservation.

Data provided by council documents shows a 12% increase in Cairns’ population over the past five years, intensifying demands on infrastructure and environmental safeguards. The region’s average daily water consumption rose to 46 megalitres, prompting council’s priority on sustainable water management.
