Cairns infrastructure projects: The data and statistics behind the story

The largest infrastructure project under way in Cairns is the $325.5 million Cairns Water Security Stage 1 drinking water supply, with the contract awarded to John Holland Qld.

These figures come from project lists maintained by Cairns Regional Council and state agencies. They show the scale of spending on water, roads, health and marine facilities at a time when the city is managing population growth and supply needs. Road and highway upgrades

The $535 million Bruce Highway, Cairns Southern Access Stage 3 between Edmonton and Gordonvale is nearing completion, with the Australian Government contributing $428 million. A separate $300 million project is duplicating the Cairns Western Arterial Road between Redlynch and Captain Cook Highway to a four-lane dual carriageway. These two road schemes together account for $835 million in committed spending.

Health and marine facilities

In the marine sector, the $180 million Cairns Marine Precinct is on track to begin construction and will include a 5,000-tonne ship-lift and three ship hardstand areas.
