Council budget decisions shape daily costs for Cairns households

Cairns Regional Council adopted a $785.6 million budget for 2026-27 that includes a 3.95% general rates rise and a $308 million capital works program.

The adopted budget sets out how council will allocate funds for water security, transport and disaster recovery in the year ahead. Residents will see the changes reflected in their rates notices and in the cost of routine activities such as parking in the city centre.

Direct costs for median households

Total annual costs for a median residential property are estimated to increase by approximately 7.5%, or roughly $283. Waste management charges will rise 20.3% and water access charges will increase 10.7%. New parking rules that took effect on 1 July set the on-street rate at $2.40 per hour and impose a two-hour weekday limit on free centre-median parking.

These adjustments follow the council’s adoption of the full-year budget and will apply uniformly across the nine divisions represented by Mayor Amy Eden, who was elected in 2024. The next local government election is scheduled for 2028.

Infrastructure strain and water use

The council is addressing critical infrastructure failures at three local reservoirs. Two are offline and the largest is operating at 60% capacity. Council has urged residents to conserve water ahead of possible Level 1 restrictions.
