Cairns Regional Council advances water security and flood works across multiple sites
Ongoing projects target drinking water supply, recovery from past events and new housing capacity in the region.

Cairns Regional Council has listed eleven major projects in active planning, design or construction phases, with several focused on water infrastructure and flood recovery as shown on its dedicated projects page.
These efforts reflect years of planning to meet demands from population growth and past weather events that have strained local systems, with work now moving forward on sites spread from the northern beaches to southern suburbs.
Projects tied to water and recovery needs
One initiative, the Cairns Water Security Stage 1 Project, centres on developing a new drinking water supply for the city. The Flood Recovery Program remains in progress with work documented at locations such as Casuarina Street. A separate Leak Detection Program running from 2022 to 2025 targets leaks across the wider water network, while the Northern Beaches water network upgrade covers a ten-year schedule of pipe installation and replacement to improve flow and cut breakages.
The Mount Peter Priority Development Area is listed as delivering trunk infrastructure to support more than 18,500 homes for 42,500 people, accelerating planning for that growth corridor. The Navigation Drive road link connects Trinity Beach and Trinity Park, and the Northern Beaches Leisure Trail adds shared walking and cycling paths through Clifton Beach and similar foreshore areas.
Recreation and planning updates
Sport and park upgrades include the Jeff Pezzutti Park project at Woree and the Pyramid Parklands Gujura site, formerly known as Kenrick Street Park, which follows a masterplan for family recreation. The Major Events Precinct at the Cairns Showgrounds and Barlow Park is still in planning and design. Resource Recovery 2040 provides a long-term roadmap for waste management in the city.
