Cairns residents gain say on central precinct as council reviews $1.1 billion state funding package

Cairns Regional Council has drawn attention to more than $1.1 billion in Queensland state funding tied to long-term local priorities, while opening community consultation on a masterplan for 26 hectares at the heart of the city.

The announcements arrive as residents prepare for seasonal events and scheduled maintenance that will alter access to popular sites along the Esplanade and in surrounding suburbs. Council communications stress that these updates cover projects already in motion and services residents use regularly, giving people time to adjust plans or contribute feedback before decisions are locked in.

Funding and planning decisions now open to input

The council’s review of the state budget flags support for projects that have sat on the local agenda for years. At the same time, the Major Events Precinct Masterplan consultation invites residents to comment on how the 26-hectare site should develop. Both items sit within the same batch of recent releases, signalling that larger capital decisions and everyday service notices are being released together so the community can see connections between funding and on-ground change.

Edge Hill and Whitfield residents have a separate opportunity through a new Walking Network Plan aimed at improving links between schools, shops and homes. These targeted consultations sit alongside broader updates on the Climate Change Strategy 2030, which the council says reflects progress made since its original release. The timing allows people to weigh in while the documents are still in draft form rather than after adoption.

Practical changes residents need to factor in

Closer to home, the Esplanade Lagoon will close from 13 July to 16 August for its scheduled biennial maintenance. Dog owners are reminded that registration renewals are due, with the council noting potential savings for those who act before deadlines. Works have also begun on a replacement Ferris wheel for the Esplanade, replacing the existing Reef Eye attraction. Temporary road changes linked to the Cairns Show and the 7Cairns Marathon Festival have already been flagged for specific dates in mid-July.

Further afield, the Babinda Transfer Station will shut for one day on 15 July to process green waste. King tides are expected to affect low-lying areas between 11 and 17 July. These notices follow earlier advice on water-main repairs completed at the end of June and new partnership agreements supporting sport, culture and environmental groups across the region.
