Cairns Regional Council has issued flood and storm emergency assistance updates as Far North Queensland flooding reaches dangerous levels with heavy rainfall expected to continue.
Flood Assistance and Sandbag Availability
Personal Hardship Assistance of $180 for individuals is now available. Free sandbags are available at Portsmith, Smithfield, Gordonvale, and Babinda Transfer Stations from 8:30am to 5:15pm daily until supplies run out. Non-life-threatening flood or storm incidents can be reported to SES on 132 500.
Hospital and Exclusion Zone Status
Cairns Hospital's Emergency Department remains open 24/7 for critical care with a current median wait time of 15 minutes and 9 patients waiting. An exclusion zone remains in place along the Esplanade, Abbott Street, and Florence Street following a helicopter crash in which the pilot was declared deceased and no ground injuries occurred. For life-threatening emergencies residents should call Triple Zero (000).
