Updated National Schools Resourcing Model Adjusts Funding for Cairns Public Schools

The federal government has updated the National Schools Resourcing Model to redirect a portion of per-student funding toward regional and remote schools, directly affecting public schools in Cairns and surrounding areas such as Smithfield and Gordonvale.

This adjustment follows the release of the 2026 federal budget papers, which recalculate loadings based on student disadvantage measures including location and Indigenous enrolment rates. Cairns schools have long recorded higher proportions of students from low-income households and those identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander compared with metropolitan averages.

Why the timing matters for Far North Queensland

The change arrives as the state government prepares its own education allocations for the 2027 school year. Local education administrators in Cairns are now required to submit revised staffing plans that reflect the new federal loadings before the end of August.

For Cairns residents this means primary schools such as Cairns Central State School and Trinity Bay State High may receive additional funds for teacher aides and specialist support staff. Secondary students could see expanded access to vocational education programs linked to the local tourism and marine industries.

Policy analysts note that the model uses Australian Bureau of Statistics data on school locations to determine remoteness loadings. The Productivity Commission has previously reported that regional schools in Queensland spend on average 12 per cent more per student on transport and utilities than urban counterparts.

The Department of Education expects schools to finalise their 2027 budgets by October, after which parents will receive updated information on available programs through school newsletters and parent portals.
