Northern Beaches shift
Smithfield Shopping Centre now sits five minutes from the new dedicated bus lanes that run past the James Cook University campus at Smithfield and continue north to Trinity Beach. Local real estate agents report 47 contracts signed on blocks between McGregor Road and the highway since May, many to tourism workers who previously rented closer to the esplanade.
Chinese investment groups have resumed site inspections along Trinity Beach Road after a three-year pause, with two parcels under contract at $380,000 each. The median house price across the Northern Beaches remains $415,000, well below the state figure of $420,000.
Prices and timelines
Cairns Regional Council data show 312 new lots released in Smithfield this financial year, compared with 189 the year before. Stage one of the corridor cost $47 million and included four new bus stations at the university, the shopping centre, Trinity Beach and Clifton Beach. A further $12 million upgrade to the McGregor Road interchange is scheduled for completion in December 2027.
Buyers should check current listings through local agents and confirm school catchments with Education Queensland before signing. Council planning officers will hold a public information session at the Smithfield Library on 22 July to outline remaining subdivision stages and infrastructure contributions.
