Cairns Athletics Clubs Attract Record Student Numbers Across Suburbs
Record numbers of students have joined local athletics groups this season, strengthening connections in suburbs from Manunda to Freshwater.
How we reported this

More than 1,200 high school students registered for Cairns athletics programs by early July 2026, a 33 percent increase from the same point last year.
The growth comes as families seek structured after-school activities that keep teenagers active while linking them to nearby residents and businesses. Clubs have added training slots and volunteer roles to meet demand without raising the standard $145 seasonal fee.
Training sites draw families from multiple suburbs
Sessions at Barlow Park on Severin Street now include athletes from Cairns State High School and Trinity Anglican School, while the Edge Hill Community Centre hosts weekend relays for students from Freshwater State School. Organisers at the Cairns Athletics Association coordinate transport from Manunda and Cairns North so parents working late shifts can collect their children after 7 pm practices.
These locations sit within a 15-minute drive of most northern beaches homes, allowing siblings and grandparents to watch heats without long trips into the CBD. Local cafes along Captain Cook Highway supply post-training meals on competition days, turning routine meets into neighbourhood gatherings.
Numbers show steady growth and clear next steps
Association records list 47 volunteer coaches active this month, up from 31 in July 2025. The same data shows 18 percent of participants now come from outside the original school catchment zones, a sign that word-of-mouth travel between suburbs is working. Registration for the next block of sessions opens 1 August at the association office on McLeod Street.
Families can sign up online or drop forms at the Edge Hill centre before the 31 July cutoff. New members receive a free club singlet and access to the existing Saturday morning time trials already scheduled through October.
