The Sheridan Street Sports Precinct will open registration for public programs on July 15 after council upgrades to its fields and courts were completed last month.
These changes follow a spike in local demand for affordable training spaces ahead of the 2026-27 summer competitions run by several Cairns leagues, where participation numbers have climbed steadily since the start of the year.
Access covers the main grounds on Sheridan Street near its intersection with McLeod Street and extends to partner sessions at the Edge Hill Community Centre on Russell Street. The Cairns Touch Association at Barlow Park in Westcourt also feeds players into the same booking system for shared events and clinics.
Facility data released by Cairns Regional Council shows bookings rose 28 percent in the first half of 2026, with adult sessions priced at $12 and junior sessions at $8 under the structure that takes effect next week.
Registration steps
Applicants need to fill the online form on the council website or attend the service counter at 119 Abbott Street by July 20 for priority placement. A residential address check and short health form are mandatory, but no prior experience or club membership is required to begin.
Staff process applications within two business days and send confirmation with a QR code for entry. Early slots fill quickly, especially the 6am weekday options popular with workers on the port shift roster.
Equipment and first sessions
New users should bring runners suited to synthetic turf, a drink bottle and a change of shirt, since the precinct supplies balls, cones and bibs at no extra cost. Introductory sessions begin on Saturday July 18 at 8am in the main pavilion and repeat each weekend through August.
Residents who complete the first four weeks receive a discounted renewal rate of $30 for the following three months. The council advises checking the precinct calendar online each Friday to lock in preferred times before they close.
