The result arrives as the national university sports calendar shifts into its second semester block, with regional squads now eyeing qualification for the Australian University Games scheduled for September in Perth.

Players from the Smithfield campus trained at the university’s own ovals before moving sessions to the Lake Street end of the Cairns CBD for match-day warm-ups, drawing supporters from nearby Edge Hill and Manoora neighbourhoods who paid $15 entry at the gate.

Official match statistics recorded 2,340 spectators, the highest mid-week crowd for a Cairns university fixture since the 2023 season when average attendance sat at 1,180.

In the same round the JCU football team lost 2-1 to the University of the Sunshine Coast at Cazaly’s Stadium, conceding in the 78th minute after leading at half-time. The result leaves the side fourth on the table with three matches remaining before finals.
