Volunteer Coaches Build Cairns Sports Movement From Grassroots Up

Cairns United under-12s open their winter season on Saturday at the Edge Hill Sports Complex with a roster drawn almost entirely from three nearby suburbs.

The timing aligns with renewed local interest in football following Argentina’s quarter-final win over Switzerland on July 11 and England’s extra-time victory against Norway the same day. Families in Cairns have used that global exposure to push enrolment at junior programs that started years earlier on public reserves.

Fields that started it all

Play began on a single unmarked rectangle behind the Mulgrave Road Community Centre in 2019. Parents cleared lantana, painted lines and bought second-hand goals. The group later added a second site at the old showgrounds off Severin Street. Both locations still host the bulk of training sessions for the club’s six junior teams.

Coaches rotate duties without pay. One former player who now works at the Cairns Hospital supplies first-aid kits each month. The club’s annual budget remains under $18,000, covered by a $140 season fee and sausage sizzles run outside Bunnings on McLeod Street.

Numbers that show growth

Registration records show 187 juniors signed on for the current season, up from 112 in 2023. The increase matches a 25 per cent rise in after-school sport participation reported by the Cairns Regional Council across its four main precincts. Equipment grants from the state government covered new balls and bibs delivered in April.

Next steps are straightforward. New players can register at the Edge Hill Sports Complex on Tuesday evenings between 5 pm and 6.30 pm or complete the online form on the club website before the July 20 cut-off. Matches begin the following weekend on Severin Street.
