Participation Data and What It Tells Us About Local Fitness Culture
Council figures released on 10 July show an 18 per cent rise in organised activity sign-ups across Cairns over the past 12 months.
How we reported this

Organised fitness participation in Cairns reached 18,400 registered users in the April to June quarter, up from 15,600 the same period last year.
The increase follows the 2026 World Cup cycle and aligns with council efforts to expand accessible programs after the June school holidays. Local operators report steady demand from adults aged 25 to 45 who cite flexible session times as the main driver.
Sign-ups have grown fastest in the CBD and Edge Hill. The Cairns Regional Council Active Cairns program, run from the Spence Street Community Centre, added three new evening classes on Lake Street in May. At the same time the Trinity Beach Surf Lifesaving Club opened a weekly ocean-swim series that now draws 120 participants each Saturday morning.
Numbers behind the trend
Council data published on 10 July lists an average monthly membership cost of $38 across participating venues, with drop-in classes priced at $11. The same report records 4,200 new registrations at the Mulgrave Road Aquatic Centre since January, the highest single-site total. Walking and running groups along the Esplanade account for another 2,800 active members, tracked through the council app.
These figures point to a shift toward shorter, repeatable sessions rather than long-term club commitments. Morning boot camps at the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon now cap at 35 places and fill within 48 hours of opening bookings.
Next steps for residents
Residents can check current timetables and prices on the Active Cairns website or visit the Spence Street centre between 8 am and 6 pm on weekdays. New participants receive a free two-week trial pass at any listed venue when they register through the council portal before 31 July.
