Cairns rugby forward Marcus Reilly has drawn fresh attention from national selectors this week as the Cairns Rugby Union prepares its squad for the Queensland Premier Rugby season.

The timing aligns with the Wallabies' recent results under coach Joe Schmidt, which have left room for fresh talent evaluations before the July 25 cutoff for extended squad considerations. Reilly's consistent performances in club trials have positioned the 24-year-old as one of several regional players under review by Rugby Australia staff.

Training Roots in Smithfield and the Esplanade

Reilly trains daily at the Smithfield Sports Complex off Captain Cook Highway, where the Cairns Rugby Union runs its academy program for under-23 athletes. Evening sessions often shift to the Esplanade foreshore for conditioning drills that incorporate the area's tidal flats. The club also uses the nearby Parramatta Park fields for contact work, a site that hosted the union's junior development camps throughout June.

These locations have supported a rise in participation numbers, with the union reporting 312 registered senior players this year compared with 287 in 2025.

Season memberships at Barlow Park, the union's main venue on Severin Street, are priced at $185 for adults, granting access to all 11 home fixtures beginning August 1. Average attendance at last year's matches reached 4,200, with the highest crowd of 6,150 recorded during the September semifinal against Brisbane.
