Cairns Amateur Leagues: Round 12 Delivers Heated Finishes and Shifting Top Spots

Amateur league teams across Cairns fought through a hot and humid weekend, producing scorelines that reshaped the top of several competition ladders. In the Cairns AFL, Manunda Hawks edged Port Douglas by 11 points at Centenary Lakes on Saturday, a result that lifted them into third place with three rounds remaining. The Hawks trailed by 17 points at three-quarter time before kicking five unanswered goals in the final term.

Football and rugby league battles

In Football Far North Queensland’s premier men’s division, Edge Hill United held its lead at the top with a 3-1 win over Stratford at the Endeavour Park turf. The victory keeps them two points clear of Mareeba United, who beat Leichhardt 2-0 away on Saturday evening. Edge Hill’s next fixture is away to Douglas United next Saturday; a loss could open the door for Mareeba to take top spot if they defeat Stratford.

Rugby league’s Cairns District Rugby League (CDRL) A-grade competition saw Brothers Leprechauns retain the minor premiership position after a 28-14 win over Ivanhoes at Stan Williams Park. The Leprechauns’ defence held Ivanhoes scoreless in the second half, a performance their coach attributed to a halftime defensive reshuffle. With four rounds left before finals, Ivanhoes now sit fourth and risk dropping out of the top five if they lose to Innisfail in round 13.

At Barlow Park on Sunday afternoon, the Southern Suburbs Cockatoos turned in a 36-10 victory against the Yarrabah Seahawks, keeping their own finals hopes alive. Southern Suburbs sit sixth, one win out of the top five. The Seahawks, now winless since round 8, are anchored at the bottom of the ladder.

Netball and the road to finals

Cairns Netball Association’s A-grade competition produced a tight contest between Norths and Saints on Friday night at the Cazaly’s Netball Centre. Norths won 38-35, a result that moves them to second place behind undefeated Centrals. Saints, who had won their previous three matches, dropped to fourth. The top four teams qualify for the finals series beginning in mid-August.

Centrals continued their dominant season with a 44-28 win over Souths, extending their winning streak to 12 matches. Centrals will face Norths in next Friday’s round-14 fixture, widely considered a preview of the grand final.

Across all codes, most amateur leagues in Cairns have between three and five weeks remaining in their regular seasons. Finals schedules are expected to be confirmed by early August. Clubs are urging supporters to arrive early for the remaining home-and-away rounds as ground capacities may be limited due to ongoing upgrades at venues including Barlow Park and Endeavour Park.
