Barlow Park played host to the FNQ Junior Rugby League grand finals on Saturday, with more than 2,000 spectators packing the stands across four age divisions. The under-14s match went down to the wire, with the Innisfail Leprechauns edging the Cairns Brothers 18-16 in extra time.

Barlow Park, on the corner of Mulgrave Road and Kenny Street in Parramatta Park, has also this week been the venue for Far North Queensland Football's senior men's trial matches. The Edge Hill United first-grade side ran out 4-1 winners against Stratford Dolphins on Tuesday evening, in a game FNQ Football officials said was used to assess selection for the regional representative squad bound for the state championships in Brisbane next month.
The ground's primary oval and adjoining training fields are maintained by Cairns Regional Council and are used year-round. The complex also features a covered grandstand that seats about 500 people, though most spectators this week opted to stand along the sidelines.
What the numbers show
While attendance figures for the midweek football trial were not recorded, the junior league grand finals on Saturday drew an estimated 2,300 people, consistent with the venue's capacity for major local events. Barlow Park has a total listed capacity of 15,000 for concerts but typically sees between 1,500 and 3,000 for regional sport fixtures. The clubhouse turnover on grand final day was reported at about $4,200 in canteen sales, according to a volunteer organiser.
Looking ahead, the facility will be used for finals of the Cairns Netball Association competition in early August, and FNQ Football has scheduled another round of representative trials for mid-July. No further public announcements have been made about A-League strike action affecting any scheduled exhibition matches at the ground.
