Cairns College Campuses Strengthen Sports Infrastructure Through Expanded Programs

JCU Cairns Campus is offering Semester 2 social sports including 6-a-side soccer and half-court basketball starting in week three, with the Gunyarra Cup inter-college basketball event scheduled to begin March 15.

These offerings rely on existing college infrastructure at JCU Cairns Campus to host regular sessions in soccer and basketball. The setup allows students across colleges to access organised play without needing external venues. CQUniversity has formed a new partnership with St Augustine’s College in Cairns to nurture home-grown sports talent ahead of Cairns hosting soccer at the 2032 Olympic Games, focusing on sports psychology and talent identification.

The partnership draws on St Augustine’s College participation in CISSA and JSS sporting competitions with pathways to regional and state levels, offering over 20 sports including rugby league, soccer, AFL, and basketball. St Augustine’s College Cairns secured the Overall Champion Boys School title and combined with St Monica’s as Overall Champion School at the JSS Grand Finals, with their AFL team winning the Grand Final 93-8 against Newman College.
