Strong club base signals active participation
Cairns supports more than 400 sport and recreational clubs offering competitive leagues in at least 30 sports. The local rugby league competition includes seven clubs while the Cairns Baseball League fields six teams. Cairns Taipans compete in the National Basketball League as the only not-for-profit club in that competition, and regular national-level events in football, rugby league and AFL are hosted locally.
Junior programs add further depth, with Edmonton Junior Rugby League Club established in 2002 and Cairns South Futsal formed in 2023. Brothers Leagues Club Cairns, a not-for-profit community organisation, has directed resources into nearly 300 community sports development projects across Far North Queensland.
