Cairns runners hit the track as winter season heats up at Barlow Park
Local athletes from Cairns State High School and the Cairns Athletics Club log strong results on the eight-lane IAAF-standard track at Barlow Park ahead of district and regional trials.
How we reported this

The winter athletics season is in full swing across Cairns, with school and club runners posting competitive times at Barlow Park this week. Cairns State High School students in Years 7 through 12 are currently trialling for district (TCC) and regional (Peninsula) representative honours, according to the school's sports program. The Cairns Athletics Club has been hosting its regular Friday night track meets at the stadium, drawing athletes from across the region.
Barlow Park the hub for high-performance training
Barlow Park remains the premier athletics venue in Far North Queensland, featuring an eight-lane IAAF-standard track, long jump pits, and grassed fields. The facility serves as the home base for both the Cairns Athletics Club and secondary-school competitions. Club nights are held most Friday evenings during school terms, offering a full program of track and field events for ages 12 and up.
Multiple high schools are also channelling talent through regional athletics training centres under Athletics Queensland's Tropical North Region. Schools such as Smithfield State High School, Mossman High School, and Tully High School are among those hosting development programs aimed at preparing young athletes for higher-level competition.
Inter-school carnivals and free community fitness options
Cairns secondary schools compete in the CISSA (Years 10-12) and JSS (Years 7-9) inter-school sporting systems, which include annual athletics carnivals. Peace Lutheran College and Cairns State High are both active in these programs. The Cairns Regional Council also offers free daily Active Living fitness classes along the Esplanade, including yoga, Zumba, beach volleyball, bouldering, and aqua aerobics, providing additional training options for runners and fitness enthusiasts.
For those looking to mix recovery with recreation, free freshwater swimming is available at Crystal Cascades, Babinda Boulders, and Stoney Creek, with no entry or parking fees. The Cairns Botanic Gardens, located near the airport, offer free admission and walking trails from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm daily.
Looking ahead, district and regional trials will continue in the coming weeks, with athletes vying for selection to Peninsula teams. The Cairns Athletics Club will maintain its Friday night schedule at Barlow Park through the end of the school term. Runners and their families can also check the Cairns Regional Council's official events calendar for updates on upcoming meets and carnivals.
