Cairns Amateur League Standings Reflect Broad Participation in Local Fitness Activities

The Cairns region supports more than 400 sport and recreational clubs that run competitive community leagues in at least 30 sports, including netball, basketball, rugby league, AFL, soccer, baseball and tennis.
Club Numbers and League Structures
Seven clubs take part in the Cairns District Rugby League community competition while the Cairns Baseball League fields six clubs. Cairns Indoor Sports runs three rotating community seasons each year, each consisting of 12 to 18 rounds followed by grand finals. Cairns South Futsal was set up in 2023 to meet demand for futsal leagues in the southern corridor. Brothers Leagues Club Cairns, a not-for-profit community organisation, has directed funding toward nearly 300 community sports development projects that encourage local participation and active living.
School Pathways and Facilities
Cairns State High School provides more than 24 sports, with excellence programs in basketball and football for students in Years 7 to 12. Secondary students compete in two major inter-school events: CISSA for Years 10 to 12 in Semester 1 and JSS for Years 7 to 9 in Semester 2, covering AFL, basketball, netball, soccer, touch football and volleyball. Barlow Park serves as the regional athletics stadium with an eight-lane IAAF-standard track and is home to the Cairns Athletics Club, which conducts Friday night training sessions during school terms for participants aged four and over. Several other high schools, including Freshwater Christian College, St Augustine’s and Peace Lutheran College, maintain after-school teams in basketball, futsal, touch football and volleyball.

In the Cairns Legends Football Over 45s competition, Miami sits on 52 points from 23 games with 16 wins, followed by Victory on 48 points and Moodies on 36 points. The Over 35s league has not yet begun, leaving all clubs including Cairns United, JGFA 35s and Reds on zero points. Port Douglas has been a consistent performer in AFL Cairns, claiming grand finals in both 2024 and 2025. In the Cairns Tuesday X-League golf standings, LJ Hookers and Smoke Hazard share the lead on 31 points after nine to ten games. The Cairns Dolphins basketball team holds second place with 12 wins from 14 games.
