Cairns Community Sports Season Heats Up: Finals Action Across Local Leagues
With over 400 sport clubs in the region, Cairns is gearing up for a packed finals season spanning rugby league, baseball, futsal and more.
How we reported this

The Cairns community sports scene is entering its most competitive stretch, with local leagues across rugby league, baseball, futsal and social sports heading into finals action. The region's network of more than 400 sport and recreational clubs, offering at least 30 competitive sports, means there is no shortage of high-stakes matches in the weeks ahead.
Rugby League and Baseball Lead the Charge
The Cairns District Rugby League competition, featuring seven clubs, is approaching its finals series. Games are regularly held at Barlow Park, the city's premier stadium and home to both rugby league and AFL fixtures. Meanwhile, the Cairns Baseball League, consisting of six clubs, is also winding up its regular season. Baseball clubs across the region have been competing in a tight race, with finals set to determine the league champion. Brothers Leagues Club Cairns, a not-for-profit community organization based at 99-107 Anderson St in Manunda, has invested in nearly 300 community sports development projects to support local league participation, including rugby league and baseball programs.
Futsal Growth in the Southern Corridor
The relatively new Cairns South Futsal competition, established in 2023, continues to expand to meet demand in the city's southern suburbs. Futsal leagues run out of venues such as Cairns Indoor Sports in Manunda and other community facilities, providing a fast-paced indoor alternative during the dry season. With social seasons rotating through Autumn, Winter and Summer, participants can expect 12 to 18 rounds per season followed by grand finals. The sport has grown quickly as an accessible option for players of all ages.
Social Sports and Pickleball Sessions
For adults seeking less intense competition, Cairns offers social sporting groups for dragon boat, tennis, cricket and pickleball. Notably, social ladies' pickleball sessions are held on Thursday mornings at Trinity Beach Tennis Club, offering a friendly-entry point to the sport. Cairns Indoor Sports also runs rotating community seasons with social leagues designed for fun rather than elite competition, with grand finals capping each season.
Pathways from School to Senior Competition
Community leagues benefit from strong school sport programs. Cairns State High School offers 24-plus sports including athletics, AFL, basketball, rugby league, soccer and swimming, with excellence programs in basketball and football for Years 7-12. Secondary students compete in two major inter-school competitions: CISSA (Years 10-12, Semester 1) and JSS (Years 7-9, Semester 2), featuring AFL, basketball, netball, soccer, touch football and volleyball. Barlow Park serves as the regional athletics stadium with an eight-lane IAAF-standard track, hosting Cairns Athletics Club training on Friday nights during school terms for ages four and up. This pipeline from school to community sport has been crucial in feeding local clubs with fresh talent each season.
What Comes Next
As regular seasons wind down, club officials are finalising fixtures for finals across rugby league, baseball and futsal. Spectators can catch matches at Barlow Park, Redlynch Community Sports Facility and Cairns Indoor Sports. With more than 400 clubs competing in 30-plus sports across the region, the next few weeks will determine which teams take home premierships. For those looking to join a club or get involved in the finals atmosphere, the Cairns regional council's Choose Cairns portal lists active clubs and facilities.
