Cairns Basketball Incorporated is launching the Faces of Junior Basketball initiative in 2026 to showcase local youth, with submissions closing on January 23, 2026. The program forms part of a broader local sports scene that includes more than 400 sport and recreational clubs and facilities across the Cairns region offering competitive leagues in at least 30 sports, including netball, basketball, rugby league, AFL and soccer.
Community Clubs and Leagues
The Cairns Baseball League consists of six clubs, while the local rugby league competition includes seven clubs. Social sports groups for adults cover dragon boat, tennis, cricket and pickleball, with specific social ladies Pickleball sessions held on Thursday mornings at Trinity Beach Tennis Club. Brothers Leagues Club Cairns, a not-for-profit organisation at 99-107 Anderson St, Manunda, has invested in nearly 300 community sports development projects to support local clubs.
Facilities and School Pathways
Key facilities supporting community leagues include Barlow Park, home to Cairns District Rugby League and AFL, Cairns Indoor Sports in Manunda, and Redlynch Community Sports Facility. Cairns State High School offers 24-plus sports including athletics, AFL, basketball, rugby league, soccer and swimming, with excellence programs for basketball and football for Years 7 to 12. Secondary students compete in CISSA for Years 10 to 12 in Semester 1 and JSS for Years 7 to 9 in Semester 2, covering AFL, basketball, netball, soccer, touch football and volleyball.
Youth Programs in Focus
The Moonlight Hoops program provides supervised, drug-and-alcohol-free basketball diversionary activity for at-risk youth aged 12 to 17 on Friday and Saturday nights from 9pm to midnight. The annual Tassel Trophy Cup serves as a premier Under 14s boys and girls youth sports carnival that attracts teams from across Far North Queensland. Multiple Cairns high schools including Freshwater Christian College, St Augustine’s and Peace Lutheran College host afterschool sports programs with teams in basketball, futsal, touch football and volleyball.
