Soccer and AFL grounds in use
The Port Douglas Dragons result and the Cairns Saints sweep both relied on established local grounds. Separate soccer fixtures involving the Dragons and Leichhardt Lions took place on fields maintained for regular weekend competition.
Swimming infrastructure for events
Over 220 swimmers took part in the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games held in Cairns from May 29 to June 1. Competition occurred at Tobruk Memorial Pool and Lake Barrine, two venues that accommodate both pool and open-water events within the same program.
Club network across the region
More than 400 sport and recreational clubs operate across the Cairns region and cover more than 30 competitive sports, including rugby league, AFL, basketball and netball. This network uses the same collection of grounds, pools and fields for training and matches throughout the year.
