Cairns Tech and Startup Scene Shows Fresh Hiring Activity This Month

Cairns firms added 47 new tech positions across software engineering, data analysis and product roles in the first ten days of July.

The increase lines up with national reports of companies filling gaps left by workers who moved south during the past two years, but the local pattern shows most openings staying inside the city rather than shifting to remote teams.

Activity on Lake Street and at the Esplanade

Two addresses stand out in the current round of listings. The Cairns Innovation Precinct on Abbott Street opened three desks last week for a seed-stage team building logistics software, while the North Queensland Startup Network ran a recruitment session at the Lagoon venue on the Esplanade on 9 July that drew 62 attendees. Both sites sit within walking distance of the CBD bus interchange, making them reachable for candidates who live in Freshwater or Smithfield.

Program details released by the Cairns Digital Alliance show that its six-week placement scheme, which started 1 July, has already matched 14 graduates with paid trials at three local companies. The scheme covers salaries at $1,100 a week during the trial period.

Numbers and next steps for applicants

Figures from the Cairns Chamber of Commerce, published 8 July, record an 18 percent rise in technology employment in the region between June 2025 and June 2026. Average advertised salaries for mid-level developer roles now sit at $118,000, up from $104,000 the previous year. The same report notes that 62 percent of the new postings require at least two years of local experience.
