Venture Rounds Fuel Digital Literacy Resource Expansion in Cairns
Local operators raised AUD 3.7 million across two rounds this year to scale training hubs and online modules serving residents from the CBD to the northern beaches.
How we reported this

Cairns operators closed AUD 3.7 million in fresh capital during the first half of 2026 to enlarge digital literacy programs that now reach more than 4,200 residents.
The money arrives as households adopt AI tools at home and employers in tourism and marine services demand workers who can handle basic data platforms. City data from the March quarter showed 62 percent of job postings listed at least one digital skill, up from 41 percent two years earlier.
Local programs draw new capital
Two sites anchor the rollout. The Cairns Library branch on Abbott Street added evening workshops on spreadsheet tools and privacy settings after its operator secured AUD 1.1 million from a Brisbane seed fund. Further north, the Smithfield Community Centre launched a six-week certificate course on 14 April that already filled three cohorts at AUD 85 per participant.
Operators say the funding covers hardware upgrades and instructor pay rather than marketing. The Smithfield site bought 18 new laptops in May and extended opening hours to 8 pm on weekdays.
Numbers behind the growth
A sector snapshot released 9 July by the Cairns Regional Council counted 1,850 course completions between January and June, a 38 percent rise from the same period in 2025. Average cost per learner fell to AUD 62 once the new capital covered fixed costs. One operator reported that 27 percent of graduates found new roles or promotions inside six months.
City planners expect another AUD 2 million round by December. Residents can check updated schedules at the Abbott Street library desk or the Smithfield centre website and register for the next intake before places fill.
