Cairns locals and visitors have a packed week ahead, with events ranging from outdoor cinema to community markets. The city’s tropical setting means many activities take advantage of the dry-season weather, with temperatures hovering around a comfortable 24 degrees.

Why now matters: July is peak season for tourism in Far North Queensland, and the local events calendar reflects that. With school holidays in full swing and international visitors returning in force, organisers have scheduled a mix of family-friendly and adult-focused events. The Cairns Regional Council’s events team has curated a program that leans into the city’s natural assets, think lagoon-side yoga and sunset markets.

This week’s highlights include the weekly Night Markets along the Esplanade, running from 5pm to 11pm every Friday and Saturday. Vendors sell everything from handmade jewellery to tropical fruit. The markets have been a Cairns institution for more than a decade. Also on the Esplanade, the free outdoor cinema series screens classic Australian films on Tuesday evenings. This week’s feature is The Castle, starting at 7:30pm.

Markets and food

The Rusty’s Markets on Grafton Street remain the city’s go-to for fresh produce and local crafts. Open from 6am to 6pm on Friday and Saturday, the markets draw hundreds of shoppers each week. Vendors report that demand for local mangoes and passionfruit has surged this season, with prices averaging around $4 a kilo. The markets also feature a dedicated food court area serving Asian, Mediterranean and Australian cuisine.

For those looking for a sit-down meal, several Cairns restaurants are offering winter specials. The Waterbar & Grill on the Esplanade has a two-course lunch deal for $35, available Monday to Friday. Meanwhile, the newly opened Osprey’s at the Cairns Yacht Club on Wharf Street has introduced a Sunday seafood buffet for $55 per person. Reservations are recommended.

Arts and culture

At the Cairns Art Gallery on Abbott Street, the current exhibition, ‘Tropical Modernism’, runs until August 2. The show features works from the gallery’s permanent collection alongside loans from private collectors. Entry is $15 for adults and free for children under 12. Gallery director Michaela Appleton noted that visitor numbers have been strong, with weekday attendance up 20 per cent compared to this time last year.

The Tanks Arts Centre on Collins Avenue hosts a live music event this Saturday night. The lineup includes local bands The Spitfires and DJ sets from Brisbane artist Nitewave. Doors open at 6pm, with tickets priced at $25. The venue, a converted WWII fuel storage facility, offers a unique acoustic experience.
