Cairns Seasonal Activities Guide: Dry Season Draws Visitors to Reef and Shows

Cairns enters its driest stretch of the year on 15 July 2026 as the Cairns Show opens at the Showgrounds for three days of exhibits and rides.

The June-to-August dry season brings daytime temperatures between 17°C and 26°C with low humidity and almost no rain, conditions that push snorkelling, diving and sailing to their busiest months on the reef.

Reef and marine options

Operators report steady bookings for day trips to Green Island and Fitzroy Island where glass-bottom boats and snorkel gear remain in regular use. Humpback whale watching runs through July and August with dwarf minke encounters listed from June into July. Beach swimming carries no stinger risk because the marine stinger season ends in May.

Hot-air balloon flights over the Atherton Tablelands, bungy jumps and sailing charters fill morning schedules under clear skies. The 4,800-square-metre saltwater pool at the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon stays open daily for families, next to Muddy’s Playground splash park.

Weekly markets and the show

The Cairns Farmers Market operates every Saturday from 8am to 1pm at the Cruise Liner Terminal while the Esplanade Markets run the same day until 4pm. Night Markets open daily from 5pm to 11pm in the city centre. The Cairns Show, listed on the council calendar, begins today and runs through Friday 17 July.
