From lagoon to rainforest: The ultimate family activities roundup for Cairns this July

The 2026 Cairns Show kicks off today, Wednesday 15 July, at the Cairns Showgrounds, running through Friday 17 July. The three-day event offers animals, rides and fireworks, the perfect anchor for a family day out. But with school holidays in full swing, there’s far more to keep the kids busy across the city and beyond.

For families looking for a free splash, the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon remains the go-to. The 4,800-square-metre saltwater pool is safe from stingers and crocodiles, with shallow sections for toddlers. Right next door is Muddy’s Playground, complete with a splash park and climbing frames. The whole strip is a central family hub, with free live music some weekends at the Lagoon or Fogarty Park.

Rainforest, reef and wildlife close to town

A day trip to Kuranda via the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway gives kids a bird’s-eye view of the canopy before exploring wildlife zoos such as the Cairns Wildlife Dome or Kuranda Koala Gardens. For water-park thrills, Sugarworld Adventure Park offers both wet and dry rides.

If you’d rather head to the islands, Green Island delivers beach swimming and glass-bottom boat tours. Fitzroy Island, another short ferry ride, has rainforest walks, a turtle rehabilitation centre, and Nudey Beach, both are rated as family-friendly day trips.

When the tropical heat gets too much, there are indoor options in the CBD. The Cairns Aquarium and Cairns Koalas & Creatures provide air-conditioned wildlife experiences. Rusty’s Market, open every Friday to Sunday, is packed with diverse eateries and fresh tropical fruit, a cheap and easy lunch stop.

Hikes, swims and go-karts

Active families can tackle the Mount Whitfield Conservation Park for bushwalking with city views, or cool off at Crystal Cascades or the Rocks Reserve. Both are natural swimming holes north of the city. For something faster, go-karting and escape rooms at Yorkeys Knob offer indoor entertainment.

The regular weekly events calendar also features the Cairns Farmers Market every Saturday from 8am to 1pm at the Cruise Liner Terminal, plus the Cairns Esplanade Markets on Saturday from 8am to 4pm. The Cairns Night Markets are open nightly on the Esplanade for souvenirs and snacks.

Looking further ahead, the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair runs in early August, celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, followed by the 10-day Cairns Festival from late August to early September with street parades, light installations, concerts and fireworks, most of it free across the city.
