Cycling routes safe for families and beginners

Cairns Regional Council finished installing new wayfinding signs and widened shoulders on 12 kilometres of paths on 15 June 2026.

Interest in low-impact outdoor activity has grown since council data showed a 25 percent rise in family participation in active recreation programs between 2024 and 2025.

Routes through the Esplanade and Centenary Lakes

One marked loop starts at the southern end of the Cairns Esplanade near the lagoon and runs north for 4 kilometres before turning inland to Centenary Lakes. The path stays flat, uses dedicated bike lanes separated from cars on Lake Street, and passes shaded rest spots with water fountains. Another beginner-friendly stretch follows the path beside Rusty's Markets on Spence Street, then connects to the western side of Flecker Botanic Gardens where wide shared trails wind past the orchid display and exit onto Collins Avenue.

Both routes avoid steep grades and keep riders within 2 kilometres of Cairns Base Hospital for quick access if needed. Council installed additional bike racks at the gardens entrance and at the Esplanade lagoon in April this year.

Practical steps for first rides

Beginners can hire basic bikes and child seats for $12 a day from the hire stand at the Esplanade lagoon car park. Early morning starts before 8 am keep riders clear of peak foot traffic and let families finish before the day warms up. Riders should carry water, wear helmets, and check the Cairns Regional Council website for any temporary closures before heading out.

Parents new to group rides can join the free Saturday morning learn-to-ride sessions run by the council's Active Cairns program at Centenary Lakes, which resumed in July 2026 after a short winter break.
