Cairns Esplanade: The Lagoon, Boardwalk and Waterfront

The Cairns Esplanade is the social heart of the city, running along the waterfront in the absence of a natural swimming beach (the foreshore is tidal mudflat). The centrepiece is the free public swimming lagoon, a large salt-water pool open daily and popular with locals and visitors throughout the year. A boardwalk runs the length of the Esplanade with regular exercise stations, barbecue facilities and seating, and early mornings and evenings see a steady flow of runners, walkers and cyclists. The Esplanade is also home to the Cairns Night Markets and a range of restaurants and bars. It is within easy walking distance of most CBD accommodation.
