Cairns Esplanade: The Lagoon, Boardwalk and Waterfront
The Cairns Esplanade is the social heart of the city, running along the waterfront in the absence of a natural swimming beach (the foreshore is tidal mudflat). The centrepiece is the free public swimming lagoon, a large salt-water pool open daily and popular with locals and visitors throughout the year. A boardwalk runs the length of the Esplanade with regular exercise stations, barbecue facilities and seating, and early mornings and evenings see a steady flow of runners, walkers and cyclists. The Esplanade is also home to the Cairns Night Markets and a range of restaurants and bars. It is within easy walking distance of most CBD accommodation.

Cairns Esplanade Lagoon
A free, saltwater swimming lagoon on the Esplanade, built as an alternative to the jellyfish-prone ocean, 4,800 square metres of patrolled swimming for locals and visitors.

Esplanade Boardwalk and Mudflats
A flat walking and cycling boardwalk along the mangrove-lined foreshore, with migratory shorebirds at low tide and excellent sunset views across Trinity Inlet.

Muddy's Playground
A large free playground on the Cairns Esplanade with water play equipment, climbing structures and shaded picnic areas, a highlight for families with young children.

Esplanade Dining Strip
The hotel and restaurant strip along the Esplanade, with outdoor terraces overlooking the mudflats and a concentration of seafood restaurants, bars and cafes.

Marlin Marina
The departure point for Great Barrier Reef liveaboard, day-trip and snorkelling operators, with the Reef Fleet Terminal and a marina-side restaurant and bar strip.
