Pedal power and gridlock: How Cairns is reshaping the daily commute

Cairns residents are trading four wheels for two at record rates this winter, as the city’s major arteries struggle to handle the post-pandemic commuter surge. Data from the Department of Transport and Main Roads indicates a 14 percent increase in cyclist traffic along the Captain Cook Highway corridor since January. While the morning fog rarely settles over the tropics, the city's approach to transit is thickening, forcing a rethink of how locals navigate the commute from the northern beaches to the CBD.

Infrastructure shift on the Esplanade

The city council has officially moved into the second phase of the 'Cairns Bike Strategy 2026', a $4.2 million infrastructure overhaul. Construction crews are currently widening the cycle paths near the Esplanade Lagoon to accommodate the overflow. Where luxury SUVs once monopolised the curb near the Cairns Aquarium, clearly marked transit lanes now prioritise shared micro-mobility devices. This shift isn't just about urban aesthetics; it’s a direct response to the bottlenecking that occurs every workday at 8:00 am near the intersection of Lake and Shields Streets.

Local businesses are feeling the pressure to adapt. The Salt House and nearby cafes are reporting that three out of every ten morning patrons now arrive via bike or e-scooter, up from just one in ten in 2024. For a city built on the convenience of the sprawling suburban drive, this cultural pivot is jarring. Retailers along Grafton Street have begun installing high-security bike racks to capture the spending power of the new wave of pedal-commuters who find parking their sedans an increasingly futile endeavour.

The price of the daily grind

Commuting costs have climbed alongside the mercury. Petrol prices in Cairns averaged $1.98 per litre last week, a figure that continues to bite into the average household budget. Meanwhile, TransLink has maintained its fare structure, but the reliability of the Sunbus network remains a point of contention among those living in Redlynch or Brinsmead. With a monthly go card spend often exceeding $160 for daily travellers, the upfront cost of an e-bike—which can range from $1,200 to over $4,000—is increasingly being viewed as a long-term capital investment rather than a luxury purchase.

The pressure on city planners is only going to intensify as the dry season peaks and tourist traffic spikes. Those looking to avoid the gridlock should keep a close watch on the upcoming Cairns Regional Council meeting scheduled for July 18, where the expansion of the 'Active Transport Connectivity' grants will be debated. For now, the smartest way to make it to an office meeting in the city remains the early morning transit, preferably well before the 7:45 am peak, when the flow of traffic coming in from the northern suburbs effectively turns the Bruce Highway into a parking lot.
