    Tropical low intensifies off the coast

    The Bureau of Meteorology has upgraded the offshore tropical low east of Cooktown. Watch zones extended south to include Cairns and the Cassowary Coast.

    The Earlville evacuation centre is open from 2pm for residents in low-lying areas. Bring medications, ID and bedding.

    Ergon is reporting roughly 1,200 properties without power across northern Cairns suburbs. Crews dispatched, restoration targeted before 3pm.
