Cairns has seen a 25% increase in tech startups over the past year, with many setting up shop in the city's thriving innovation hub along Grafton Street and Spence Street.

This surge in technological growth matters now because it has the potential to significantly impact the local economy and job market. With major companies like Oracle and Google having already established a presence in the city, the tech industry is poised to become a major driver of growth in Cairns. However, this growth also raises important questions about the potential risks and challenges associated with rapid technological advancement, including issues related to data privacy, job displacement, and environmental sustainability.

In Cairns, organisations like the Cairns Chamber of Commerce and the Tropical North Queensland TAFE are working to support the growth of the tech industry, with initiatives like the Cairns Innovation Centre and the FNQ Cyber Security Cluster. The city's James Cook University is also playing a key role, with its Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering offering a range of programs and research opportunities in areas like artificial intelligence and data science. Meanwhile, coworking spaces like The Precinct in Cairns and the Space Station in nearby Palm Cove are providing a hub for tech entrepreneurs and startups to connect and collaborate.

Assessing the Risks and Challenges

According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the tech industry in Cairns is currently worth around $1.3 billion, with an estimated 3,500 people employed in the sector. However, a recent report by the Queensland Government found that 70% of tech companies in the state are concerned about the potential risks associated with cyber security, while 60% are worried about the impact of technological change on their workforce. With the average salary for a tech worker in Cairns standing at around $83,000, there are also concerns about the potential for job displacement and the need for workers to continually update their skills in order to remain relevant in the job market.

As the tech industry in Cairns continues to grow and evolve, it's likely that we'll see a greater focus on addressing these challenges and risks. This may involve the development of new programs and initiatives aimed at supporting workers who are displaced by technological change, as well as increased investment in cyber security and data protection. For now, the city's tech community is advised to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing these issues, with a focus on ensuring that the benefits of technological growth are shared by all. The Cairns City Council has announced plans to host a series of workshops and forums on these issues, starting from August 2026, which will be held at the Cairns Convention Centre and will be open to the public.
