A new accelerator intake opened applications on July 7 through the Cairns Digital Innovation Program, targeting early-stage software and hardware teams working on tourism and environmental tools.

The timing aligns with increased federal interest in autonomous systems and data privacy rules, pushing local founders to secure early support before broader compliance costs rise later this year. Cairns operators see the window as useful for testing products in a regional market with strong visitor numbers and reef-related data needs.

Activity at Specific Venues

Meetups scheduled for the coming fortnight include a July 12 session at the Spence Street co-working space run by the Cairns Chamber of Commerce and a July 15 pitch night at the Smithfield campus facilities operated by James Cook University. Both locations have hosted monthly founder gatherings since early 2025, with the Spence Street site reporting steady weekday occupancy from 25 to 40 participants per event.

Additional sessions are planned at the Lake Street pop-up lab near the Esplanade, where three teams currently test drone mapping prototypes for local tourism operators.

Numbers Behind the Push

Program records show 62 applications received in the first two days of the current intake, compared with 48 total submissions across the same period in 2025. Average seed funding per accepted team sits at A$85,000, drawn from a A$1.2 million pool allocated through the state-backed regional innovation fund. One team that completed the prior cycle secured a A$400,000 contract with a Port Douglas resort group in May.

Founders can review eligibility criteria on the chamber website and submit outlines before the July 20 deadline. The next open networking slot at Spence Street starts at 6pm on July 12, with registration available through the chamber portal.
