Early on Saturday mornings at Tobruk Memorial Pool, the lane ropes are out and families line the edge, waiting for the next round of Learn to Swim classes. The interest isn’t limited to kids or young parents—after lunchtime, it’s older adults stretching for their weekly Aqua Zumba session, and on Wednesday evenings, local teens compete in friendly relay races under the lights. Cairns' aquatic centres are brimming with activity, and their programs are drawing a broader slice of the community than ever before.

The surge comes at a time when public focus on community safety and mental health is sharper than it's been in years. Recent stories—some tragic—highlight the importance of connection and resilience, especially for young people. With school holidays in full swing, and the Cairns winter offering pleasant swimming conditions, locals are taking advantage of both structured swim sessions and free-lap soak-ups to move, connect, and unwind.

Tobruk, Woree and the Cairns Aquatic Revival

The flagship Tobruk Memorial Pool on the Esplanade leads the charge. After its multi-million dollar upgrade in 2016, Tobruk now boasts three heated pools, shaded grandstands, and a hydrotherapy centre. On weekday evenings, the Swimfit Tobruk club caters for adults who want a coached workout but don’t fancy open water. Meanwhile, the younger crowd packs into Royal Life Saving Society’s water safety courses, which have returned for 2026 with refreshed curriculum after a sharp uptick in demand post-pandemic.

Not far away on Pool Close, Woree Sports and Aquatic Centre has tripled its winter timetable. Its ‘Waterwise for Life’ classes, designed for over-50s, fill nearly every slot, and the centre’s school holiday program (fees from $11 per child per session) serves families from White Rock to Manoora. For those in the city’s north, Smithfield’s pool offers Saturday family splash days and discounted lane hire for community groups, including the Cairns Crocs Triathlon Club’s weekly aquathlon series.

By the Numbers: Who’s Using Cairns’ Pools

According to Cairns Regional Council data, more than 230,000 people visited council pools in the 2024-25 financial year—a 12% jump over pre-pandemic attendance. Enrolments in group swim programs have surged; at Tobruk, over 1,100 children registered for Learn to Swim across 2025, and more than 200 seniors attended Aqua Fitness weekly at Woree this June. Family entry at Tobruk starts at $15.70 (two adults and two children), with discounts for pensioners and leisure card holders, making it more accessible than many gyms.

Instructors credit the resurgence to both affordability and the subtropical climate, but say word of mouth is just as important. “Parents hear from their neighbours, older adults bring their friends, and suddenly every lane is full,” says one long-serving swim coach at Tobruk.

The interest isn’t just recreational; Royal Life Saving Australia’s 2025 Drowning Report showed that swimming competence in Queensland’s regional communities remains a concern, particularly for children under 10 and adults born overseas. Cairns’ centres are responding by expanding beginner and refresher classes well into the dry season.

How to Dive In

For those looking to join, it’s best to check the centre’s schedule online or call ahead—popular programs often book out a fortnight in advance in winter. At Tobruk, bookings are handled via Swim Desk; Woree offers drop-in morning Aqua classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Both venues provide private and small-group lessons, as well as accessible changing facilities. Locals with concession cards can access further discounts—inquire at the front desk or through the Council’s online portal.

As Cairns’ pools continue to evolve into full-fledged community fitness hubs, there are few barriers left for residents keen to get active and meet their neighbours. With options for every age bracket and skill level, and costs kept below most city gyms, the city’s aquatic centres look set to stay at the centre of community wellness all year round.
