Over 500 people gathered at the Cairns Esplanade on June 25 to participate in the annual Cairns Fitness Challenge, a free community event that aims to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles among locals.

The event's success highlights the growing interest in community fitness initiatives in Cairns, where residents are increasingly looking for ways to get active and engaged with their community. With the city's stunning natural surroundings, including the Great Barrier Reef and the Atherton Tablelands, there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities and exercise. However, with rising concerns about obesity and related health issues, there is a growing need for programs that encourage people to get moving and adopt healthier habits.

In Cairns, a range of organisations and venues are offering fitness challenges and group exercise programs that cater to different ages and abilities. The Cairns PCYC, located on Sheridan Street, offers a range of fitness classes, including yoga, Pilates, and boot camp, at affordable prices starting from $10 per session. Meanwhile, the Cairns Regional Council's Active Living program provides free or low-cost fitness classes and workshops in various locations across the city, including the Manunda Neighborhood Centre and the Edmonton Community Centre.

Getting Involved

According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2020-21, 62.2% of adults in the Cairns region reported engaging in sufficient physical activity, which is higher than the national average. However, there is still room for improvement, with 35.4% of adults in the region reporting being overweight or obese. The Cairns Fitness Challenge and other community fitness events aim to address this issue by providing a supportive and motivating environment for people to get active and healthy. The challenge, which is sponsored by the Cairns Regional Council and the Queensland Government, offers a range of activities, including running, cycling, and swimming, and provides participants with a free fitness tracker and access to exclusive discounts at local health and fitness businesses.

For those looking to get involved in community fitness events in Cairns, there are plenty of options to choose from. The Cairns Parkrun, which takes place every Saturday at 7am at the Cairns Botanic Gardens, is a free, timed 5km run that is open to people of all ages and abilities. Alternatively, the Cairns Road Runners club, which meets every Wednesday at 6pm at the Cairns Showgrounds, offers a range of running groups and training programs for people of all levels. With its beautiful scenery, friendly community, and range of fitness programs and events, Cairns is the perfect place to get active, get healthy, and get involved in community fitness challenges.
