Walkers along the Cairns Esplanade now pause at the 1.5-kilometre mark near the lagoon to count ten steps in silence before resuming their pace.

Interest in this form of movement-based practice has grown since the Cairns Regional Council expanded its free wellness sessions at the start of 2026. Residents report using the technique to manage daily stress without adding extra time to their schedules.

Routes through the CBD and markets

Participants begin at the intersection of Abbott Street and the Esplanade, then move south past the Pier Point ferry terminal. At Rusty's Markets on Spence Street, some extend the walk by one block to incorporate the scent of mangoes and ginger from the produce stalls into their awareness of surroundings. The Atherton Tablelands offer a second option, where trails near Millaa Millaa Falls provide a steeper gradient for those who want elevation changes during the same focused breathing sequence.

Cairns Base Hospital physiotherapists have noted a rise in referrals for joint-friendly activity since January, when the council first listed walking meditation as an approved low-impact option for patients recovering from minor injuries.

Evidence from recent local counts

A March 2026 survey by the council recorded 620 people joining organised walks each week across four designated Cairns routes. The same report listed an average session length of 25 minutes, with participants instructed to match breath to stride for the first five minutes and then release the count for the remainder.

Begin by standing still for thirty seconds at your chosen starting point. Match each inhale to two steps and each exhale to three steps while keeping eyes on the path ahead. After ten minutes, drop the counting and simply register the temperature of the air or the sound of waves if you are near the water. Finish by returning to normal pace for the final stretch back to your vehicle or bus stop on Lake Street.
