Cairns is getting up earlier. A growing number of locals are rolling out mats at sunrise for outdoor meditation and yoga, drawn by cooler temperatures, quieter parks and the shifting light over Trinity Inlet.

New routines, old spaces

The trend has picked up noticeably since late 2025, when the Cairns Regional Council began trialling extended opening hours at several foreshore reserves. Fogarty Park, at the southern end of the Esplanade, now opens at 4:30am instead of 6am, according to council records. Attendance at the park's free community yoga sessions, run by local nonprofit Cairns Wellness Network on Tuesdays and Thursdays, jumped from 12 regulars in January to 48 by June this year.

At the Cairns Botanic Gardens on Collins Avenue, the gates unlock at 5:30am year-round. The gardens' curator, Margaret Waugh, told The Daily Cairns that staff have noticed a steady stream of visitors arriving before 6am since the council installed solar lighting along the main pathways in March. One group, called Riverbend Meditators, meets daily at 5:45am under the large fig tree near the pond. They are not affiliated with the Gardens but have permission to gather there. Membership has grown from 14 people in January to 37 as of last week.

The science of the early shift

The health case is straightforward. A 2023 meta-analysis published in the journal Health Psychology Review found that outdoor physical activity in natural settings reduced cortisol levels by an average of 21% more than indoor exercise, with the effect strongest in the first hour after dawn. For Cairns, where summer humidity can exceed 80% by 8am, the window between 5:30am and 7am offers the safest conditions for sustained outdoor practice. The average temperature at 6am in July is 17.2°C, according to Bureau of Meteorology data from the Cairns Aero station between 2020 and 2025.

The local health district has taken note. In April, the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service launched a six-week pilot program called Sunrise Stretch at the Cairns Base Hospital's rooftop garden. The sessions, which combine tai chi, yoga and guided meditation, run from 5:45am to 6:30am on Mondays and Wednesdays. A hospital spokesperson said 78 staff and patients attended the first session on June 1, with numbers holding steady since.

Where to go from here

For newcomers, the options are expanding. Cairns Yoga Community, a volunteer-run collective, offers donation-based classes at the Esplanade Lagoon every Saturday at 5:50am. The group has no booking system, participants just bring a mat and towel. Organisers estimate 60 to 80 people attend each session, depending on the weather.

In the southern suburbs, the Edmonton Green Park on Bruce Highway has become a hub for early meditators, thanks in part to a new covered pavilion completed in February. The Cairns Regional Council spent $340,000 on the structure, which includes shaded seating and power outlets. Local resident Grace Ng, who coordinates a weekly meditation circle there, said in a community Facebook post that the group has grown from six to 22 members since the pavilion opened.

If you are planning to try it, start small. Bring a torch until the sun fully rises, wear long sleeves against mosquitoes, and stay aware of your surroundings. The Cairns Wellness Network recommends arriving at least 10 minutes early to find your spot. Most groups are free, but some ask for a gold-coin donation toward park maintenance.

For more information, visit the Cairns Regional Council's website or check the noticeboards at Rusty's Markets. And as always, consult a local medical professional before beginning any new exercise or meditation routine.
