Bars and Nightlife in Cairns: Where to Drink in the Tropical City
Cairns has a lively bar and nightlife scene shaped heavily by tourism, with the city's CBD serving as the main entertainment hub for backpackers, resort guests and locals. The Esplanade precinct and the streets immediately behind it — particularly Shields Street and Abbott Street — have the highest concentration of bars, live music venues and late-night dining. The Pier Marketplace and Marina precinct has several waterfront bars popular with a more mature crowd. The Northern Beaches suburban strip from Yorkeys Knob to Palm Cove has its own quieter bar culture oriented toward resort guests and locals. Cairns Zoom and the casino rooftop are notable elevated options. Live music is a consistent feature of Cairns's bar scene, particularly on weekends, with several venues running regular acts through the Dry season. The town quietens somewhat in the Wet season when tourist numbers drop; checking current opening days is worthwhile in the November to April period.
