Cycling in Cairns: Paths, the Esplanade and Riding the Northern Beaches
Cairns has a growing network of cycling paths, with the Esplanade boardwalk and foreshore path being the most popular starting point for city riding. A dedicated shared path runs north from the CBD through Machans Beach, Holloways Beach, Yorkeys Knob and Clifton Beach, linking the northern beach communities. The Cairns Velodrome at Manunda is used by cycling clubs for track training and events. Mountain bike riders head to the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park in the northern suburbs. Hire bikes and electric bikes are available from several operators in the CBD and at Palm Cove. The heat and humidity of the wet season (November to April) make early morning or evening riding strongly advisable; the dry season (May to October) is by far the more comfortable time for extended rides.
