Rainy Day Activities in Cairns: Indoor Options in the Wet Season
Cairns's wet season from November to April brings significant rainfall and high humidity that can disrupt outdoor plans, but the city has a solid set of indoor options. The Cairns Museum on the corner of Lake and Shields Streets has a compact but well-curated collection covering Cairns's history from pre-colonial times through the gold rush and maritime periods. The Cairns Art Gallery on Abbott Street has free entry and a regularly changing program of exhibitions with a strong regional and First Nations focus. Cairns Zoom and Wildlife Dome on the casino roof is entirely enclosed and operates in all weather. Shopping at Cairns Central and Stockland Cairns is an obvious wet-day option. The Cairns Library on Abbott Street is air-conditioned and has good facilities. The Night Markets on the Esplanade, despite being outdoors, are partially covered and operate in all but the heaviest rain. Several cafes and bars in the CBD act as informal social hubs during heavy afternoon wet season downpours.
