Cairns sports clubs have added more than 1800 new members since January, with the biggest gains at junior and women’s programs run from local ovals and community halls.

The increase comes as families seek regular weekly activities amid rising living costs and after a wet season that disrupted many outdoor fixtures earlier in the year. Clubs have responded by extending training times and adding social sessions that keep participants connected beyond match days.

Edge Hill and Smithfield programs expand

At Edge Hill Recreation Reserve the Cairns Tigers rugby league side opened a new Tuesday night skills clinic that now draws 65 children aged eight to twelve. Further north along the Captain Cook Highway, the Marlin Coast Rugby Union club in Smithfield converted an unused storage shed into a multi-purpose meeting room used for parent workshops and post-training barbecues. Both sites sit within easy reach of residential streets where many new members live.

These additions build on existing partnerships with local schools. Cairns State High has supplied coaches for the Tigers clinic, while Smithfield State School provides the Marlin Coast club with access to its hall on Thursday afternoons for indoor sessions when fields are waterlogged.

Numbers and costs show sustained growth

Club records released this week show adult playing fees held steady at $145 for the full winter season, while junior registrations remain at $95. Participation across Cairns clubs rose 22 percent compared with the same period in 2025, according to figures compiled by the Cairns Regional Council’s sport and recreation unit. The council’s latest quarterly report also notes that 340 volunteers logged more than 4200 hours at club events between April and June.

Next month the same clubs will host a combined open day on 18 July at Barlow Park. Residents can register on site or through each club’s website for the second half of the season.
